"Nan" is a Japanese-style modern small restaurant and tavern jointly launched by Shang Shang x Han-Jia x Taipei Shannan. It has been recommended by many foodies in Tainan and other places on social platforms. I finally visited this time, but it may be that the expectations are too high, and the overall experience is not as expected, but it is disappointing.

The environment is indeed very chill as everyone said, but the space is small and the seats are compact. The air-conditioning is blowing directly at our heads in the position where we are sitting, and we feel a little uncomfortable after eating. The overall indoor atmosphere is too noisy, and it will be a bit hard for people who want to have a good chat.

Nan|Menu Introduction

Appetizers and cold dishes:

Bonito half-roasted ($300)

Aomori apples are paired with bonito, plus tarragon oil and flying fish bone sauce, which has a high degree of coordination and is the best product of the day.

Salmon loose sushi ($250)

It's not on the menu. It's the recommended dish of the day, but it tastes ordinary and lacks highlights.

Skewers

Pleurotus mushroom skewers ×2 ($300)

Paired with basil green sauce and Padano cheese, it is unexpectedly delicious. It is a surprising dish with a rich flavor level and a good drink.

Chicken neck skewers ($200)

The maturity is moderate, and the vanilla mayonnaise has an anti-greasy effect, and the performance is well-behaved.

Mentaiko Chicken Wings × 2 ($500)

This dish is very recommended! The outer skin is crispy, the inner filling is full, and the Mentaiko is full of aroma. It is very shabu-shabu with mint yogurt sauce. It is one of the few dishes worth ordering.

Hot food and main dishes

Chicken leg clam chowder ($260)

The serving size is very small, and the soup itself is quite refreshing, but the two sauces that match make people confused whether to match chicken or clams, and in fact they are not stained.

Slow-stewed beef offal ($250)

With mozzarella cheese, the overall taste is more complicated, but it is a pity that the taste of mountain pepper is not eaten.

Tender fried steak ($480)

The meat is soft and tender, but the performance is mediocre, and the pairing of side dishes with peeled chili sauce has no obvious bonus effect.

Beef Cheek Garlic Oil Noodles ($250)

The garlic flavor is obvious, the dough is Q-elastic, and the beef cheek braised sauce is also delicious. It is a more delicious dish as a whole.

Tonkatsu cream toast ($320)

It is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and it is considered innovative with citrus sauce, but the overall feeling is not very strong.

Fried soft shell crab flower branch ($340)

The outer skin is crispy, and the matching Shaoxing tofu milk sauce and garlic-flavored cuttlefish chai fish sauce are the creative highlights, and the taste is good.

Drink

🔹Honey fragrant Oolong Tea ($150)
Sweet potato shochu ($250)
SakSaketini ($250): Sake and gin, creative, but ordinary flavor, not stunning.

Overall dining experience and personal feelings

When you eat it as a whole, what is impressive is the matching design of the sauces. Some of the ideas are worth encouraging, such as tofu milk, mint yogurt and cuttlefish chai fish, but the dishes themselves are limited in amazement, the serving size is too small, and the price is too high. The small selection of the wine list, the weak sense of bartending, coupled with the crowded environment and noise, deduct a lot of points from the overall dining experience.

It's not a store I would like to visit again…

If you like to find creative sauce pairings, it might be worth exploring here; but if you value portion size, cost performance and a quiet chat environment, "Nan" may not be on your list.

Overall rating and cost

📌Rating: 4/10
📌Price:$4620 / 5 people (and can't eat enough)

關於我

Choosy Chou

Hi, this is Chou Chou. Because I have always been "picky" about good things, I founded Choosy Chou to record and share the food, flavors and travel experiences that are truly worthy of being remembered. I am a food and flavor explorer, from street food to Michelin restaurants, from hidden bars to boutique cafes, I like to use my professional senses to taste, understand and compare, rather than just taking pictures and checking in. I have WSET Wine Level 2, WSET Sake Level 1, SSI Sake Navigator, and Coffee CSP Sensory Skill Foundation licenses. I hope to use a more systematic way to show you the flavor value behind a glass of wine and a dish. I have traveled to many countries such as the United States, Japan, South Korea, Iceland, and the United Kingdom. I believe that the most authentic language in the world is hidden on the table and in the cup. Choosy is not picky, but an insistence on the quality of life. You are welcome to join me in savoring the world with higher standards.
